The first local music event of the year was again at the Tabard, and it was another “Jools-style” night, this time with variations on the Blues as a theme and, playing one tune each in turn, another three awesome bands: Son Maxwell’s Unruly Blues, Krissy Matthews’ Band and Vienna Ditto.
Son Maxwell’s Unruly Blues are Tabard regulars and were the first to go on. They offer a more traditional interpretation of the Blues, with an abundance of uptempo songs, harmonica, and LOTS of awesome groove. We filled the room every time it was their turn, and started tapping our feet to their tunes with a big smile as soon as they began playing.
Vienna Ditto and her wizard guitarist had us enthralled by her voice and the array of special effects that made the duo sound like they were an entire band! Their take on the Blues tends to be more modern and electronic, while keeping a firm grip on the soul of the genre, and is extremely enjoyable.
Krissy Matthews’ Band were the rock gods of the evening. They hit us with a wall of sound more reminiscent of harder and heavier styles of music, despite not losing sight of their roots, and had the moves as well. At more than one stage I had the urge to headbang! Is that wrong or right? You tell me! What I can say for sure is that I loved what I was hearing.
I only have one question now – sowhensthenextoneguyspleasepleaseplease?? 😀
